Daniel Hill and John Finnegan speak about major legislative amendments to the state’s real estate tax collection statute

Dan Hill and John Finnegan have been speaking at various conferences around the state this fall on the major legislative amendments to the state’s real estate tax collection statute (General Laws Chapter 60). The amendments come in the wake of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in May, 2023, which held that a taxing authority, like a city or town, must return any excess equity in the real estate that they foreclose on for nonpayment of taxes.  Chapter 60 was amended to provide a mechanism for processing excess equity claims, and set deadlines for claims that ripened before the Supreme Court’s ruling.  Dan presented at the Real Estate Bar Association’s Annual Meeting on November 4, 2024. John recently presented on this subject at the November 6, 2024 meeting of the Massachusetts Collectors and Treasurers Association at Lake Pearl in Wrentham and to the Massachusetts Municipal Lawyers Association at its November 13, 2024 “Lunch and Learn” webinar.
